I had not read these stories from The Wall Street Journal Law Blog until a good friend sent them to me this morning. I had heard quite a bit about Blankenship’s effort to sway the supreme court in a 76.3 million dollar suit against Massey Energy. The links in this post follow the story on [...]

» by admin February 24, 2008 at 1:56 pm » Comments (0)

Coal mining ravages Appalachia mountains
Prelude -“They’re ripping the tops off mountains in West Virginia coal country to feed our insatiable appetite for power. It’s cheaper that way. And the trees and the [...]

Visiting Kayford

» by admin February 24, 2008 at 11:54 am » Comments (4)

I had the opportunity to visit Kayford Mountain yesterday. Unfortunately it was extremely foggy and the pictures I have only give an indication of the destruction hidden under a blanket of fog.
Although I didn’t get to see the mountaintop removal going on around Larry’s place I did get to listen to him talk to college [...]

Wind Power vs. MTR - if it were your backyard what would you choose?

» by admin February 19, 2008 at 4:11 pm » Comments (2)

They say that “coal keeps the lights on,” but there are other ways to generate energy that are far less destructive like wind and solar which are both on the rise as two of the fastest growing inevestment markets around.
While it’s true that I don’t have the option to select wind-generated power from Appalachian [...]

In 2002 about 40% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions stem from the burning of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. Coal accounts for 93 percent of the emissions from the electric utility industry. US Emissions Inventory 2004 Executive Summary p. 10 .pdf

Show the Mountains some Love on Valentine’s Day…….

If you live in or near Kentucky, come out to Frankfort in support of the mountains this Thursday for “I Love Mountains Day”. A rally will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the Capitol building, followed by speakers (including Wendell Berry) and music. [...]

Burying The Past

» by admin February 10, 2008 at 2:19 pm » Comments (4)

Wandering through the mountains it is hard to tell where you may come across an old family cemetery. Some burial sites are nothing more than stones in a clearing. I started thinking about the atrocity to our ancestors when thinking about Larry Gibson and his family cemetery. Headstones falling over from nearby blasts, ground crumbling [...]
