A film maker friend of mine was shot dead in the 1960s for similar reasons. As for the lawyers' letters, don't believe it until it has been officially denied. In the US you have political jusges. Where I live we have SLAPP suits supported by good old British libel law: the truer the libel, the heavier the fine. Protesting citizens and environmental groups can be bankrupted.
