Clean, Carbon Neutral Coal?

» by Denny

I couldn’t have read it right. Let’s turn around and read the billboard again. Sure enough, Walker Machinery is promoting clean, carbon neutral coal.

I have a couple of questions. Has the chemistry of coal changed recently? Is there some new type of coal that I have never seen before? Carbon neutral coal would be the same as water neutral H2O, radioactive neutral nuclear energy, crooked neutral politicians - you see where I am going with this. Coal is carbon therefore how can it possibly be carbon neutral or clean for that matter?

Coal is a fossil fuel formed in ecosystems where plant remains were saved by water and mud from oxidization and biodegradation. Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black rock. It is a sedimentary rock, but the harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rocks because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. It is composed primarily of carbon along with assorted other elements, including sulfur. It is the largest single source of fuel for the generation of electricity world-wide, as well as the largest world-wide source of carbon dioxide emissions, slightly ahead of petroleum and about double that of natural gas. Wikipedia

Anthracite coal is a dense, hard rock with a jet-black color and a metallic luster. It contains between 86% and 98% carbon by weight… Bituminous coal, or soft coal, contains between 69% and 86% carbon by weight and is the most abundant form of coal. Petroleum and Coal

What Is Coal Made of?

Coal consists primarily of carbon, but this is usually mixed with various other elements, including water and mineral matter such as sand and clay.

The amounts of these other elements affects the usefulness of the coal as a fuel. The quality of coal can be determined by its rank and grade.

Energy content of coal is ranked in an ascending order of carbon content (from low to high):

Lignite, Subbituminous, Bituminous, Anthracite

CO2
Carbon dioxide is formed when carbon, the dominant element in coal and all fossil fuels, is oxidized and combusted. ChemistryofCoal.pdf

The name “carbon” comes from Latin language carbo, coal, and in some Romance languages, the word carbon can refer both to the element and to coal. Carbon

Coal is the fuel present in largest quantity on earth. It is basically carbon, left over from bacterial action upon decaying plant matter in the absence of oxygen, usually under silt and water. Over millions of years the bacterial action and pressure compact the organic material, which steadily loses moisture. The original oxygen of the organic compounds is also lost along with most but not all of the original nitrogen and hydrogen, leaving the carbon. Science, engineering and technology

Coal is a fossil fuel mined from ancient deposits. It is a black mineral of plant origin which is chemically, a complex mixture of elemental carbon, compounds of carbon containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur. Coal and Petroleum

Coal is one of the important fossil fuels that we can obtain from deep within the earth’s surface. Coal is formed by thousands and millions of years of decomposition of plants that got buried deep inside the earth due to various natural phenomena like earthquakes and volcanoes. Bacteria, high temperature and high pressure caused the slow conversion of wood into coal. This process is called carbonization. Coal is mainly carbon. Fuels - Part III - Coal

Clean, carbon neutral coal? I have a house for sale on the moon w/swimming pool - anybody at Walker Machinery interested?

    Denny,
I had to do a double-take when I first saw that billboard. There’s one on I-64 W near Institute, and another in Kanawha City. My immediate thought was “Carbon neutral coal? Whaaaa!! There’s no such thing”. Walker Cat must really be running scared to try to feed that crap to the public. Also on the billboard is the little pile of coal that stick up over the top of the sign. Are people really that gullible? To me these new billboards are as insulting to our intelligence as the infamous bug commercial and the life is thriving commercials.

you’ve got to be kidding me!!! since i’m not right in the coalfields, i don’t see these things. that’s really insane and appalling and unbelievable…etc. , etc.

and the sad thing is, people WILL believe it. they don’t research things themselves and take everything the coal companies say as truth.

Hey Denny, thanks for bringing the truth back home. They, (Walker Machinery / Coal sickoos), think the rest of civilized people, are so ignorant, that they can sell this bunch of bullshit, and we don’t know enough about coal, that we can’t figure out their lies. They are really showing just how stupid they are. Thanks for giving people the REAL truth. Carbon neutral coal, what a stupid interpetation of the truth.

Usually Walker can send me straight in to rant mode. It’s not even worth the effort with this latest campaign.

I saw one of these signs - on I64 West heading into Beckley. We need to get the word out that Beth Walker, who is running for WV Supreme Court, is married to the owner of Walker Machinery. Most people don’t connect the dots on this - no surprise. Her claim to fame with the law firm she works for is holding seminars on how to keep the Union from infiltrating your business. “Danger! Danger! Will Robinson!”

That is news to me and that is the last thing we need. What we need to do is show the entire Walker clan the door and then flip the sign from Open For Business over to Sorry We’re Closed.

I just simply don’t understand how a company that is sooo obviously in it for the money can have any credibility - that just blows my mind.

You have decided. Now it is time to decide if we need more dishonesty on the WV Supreme Court.
