The Dark Ages

Mountainsaver and I were in Drews Creek Monday with a DEP official concerning the water in the last post.

The official was a hell of a nice guy and after looking at the site we were standing around bs’ing when he said something that immediately made me think – therein lies the problem with nearly every single WV state official. I asked him how they would deal with the abandon mine. He said, they would probably just dewater the mine, draining it straight into the creek. No treatment I asked. Why treat it, it’s been draining for a long time an has already damaged the stream.

I was thinking to myself, why stop today what we can put off till tomorrow. My way of thinking, although the mine drainage has already destroyed the stream there are still people that live downstream using well water. Just because letting this stuff go is the way it has always been, in no way makes it a legitimate excuse to allow it to continue.

In some areas we have advanced in a major way as a society (mostly in areas helping us to be lazy) but in other areas I get an almost overwhelming urge to go look for flint.

I wonder if Gov. Joe Manchin has some flint and tinder he can loan me. That is one man definitely stuck in the dark ages.

denny that is probably a violation of the clean water act non degradation laws. also If there are any endangered or threatened freshwater mussels or minnows or darters downstream or nearby you can probably find someone to sue the state for violation of the ESA.

what does drews creek run into?

Folk it meets up with the creek from the Peachtree side and they flow to Big Coal River which in turn flows to the Kanawha.
