Here in Rutherford County, the beauty of our Tennessee mountains is a few hours' drive away — and sometimes farther than that from our minds. I was therefore glad to see Sunday's Editorial Roundup "Mountaintop mining levels forests" (April 20). However, that headline would have been more accurate if it had said, "Mountaintop mining levels ENTIRE MOUNTAINS."
Middle Tennesseans are largely unaware that some of our state's finest natural resources are being ravaged by this practice, which has become common throughout Appalachia, including East Tennessee. The "collateral" damage caused to our streams and air is just as horrifying as the scarred landscape.
